Spectrum

When did it become acceptable for people to say that real women--beautiful women--are the curvy women, while skinny girls are referred to as ugly twigs and skeletons?

I find it a little unnerving that we can't just accept that women are women and beauty is beauty without bashing at least some portion of a useless spectrum.

I think it became that way because the country became obsessed with losing weight (as opposed to gaining it or wearing makeup or something). Then, after a while, some people realized they didn't need to be as thin as a supermodel to be beautiful, and then they started bashing their old ideal. Kind of like Aesop's fable about the fox. When he couldn't get the goose, he said, "Well, it was probably dry and I wouldn't have wanted it anyway." Not exactly like that story, because it's not just people who *can't* lose weight who bash skinniness. It's often those who choose not to. But the principle is similar. Choices you make can feel more comfortable / right when you are able to poke holes in the alternative.

Also, they're not referring to skinny like you. They're referring to skinny like "too" skinny, where losing weight and exercising are taken to a potentially unhealthy extreme. Are there people who look like that naturally? Yes, I've known some. But not a lot (that I've known).

The moral of the story is this: I hope you don't hear those comments and think you are an ugly twig or a skeleton because you're not. :)

Also, you should go here and at least watch the video, if nothing else. It's great.
